John Franklin Bunting was born in Bethel, Maine to William Arthur Bunting and Marian Adelia Chandler. when John was twelve years old, his family moved to Washington, establishing a home in Bothell. When John was in his teens, he was going to school in Seattle and became best friends with George Salisbury.

John became an expert machinist, eventually marrying Miriam Swartz on Oct 31, 1940. Tragicly, Miriam and her unborn child lost their lives in childbirth on Nov 23, 1941 during an emergency C-section operation in her sixth month.

John's friend George, now a government chemical assayer and analyst, had married Eathyl Hildebrand on June 18, 1932, but the mutual friends had kept in touch.

George, who dealt with hypertension all his life, suffered a cerebral aneurism in the winter of 1942, was hospitalized a month, then bedridden at home another six months, dying on May 2, 1943 at 38.

The remaining friends, John and Eathyl, both now without mates, kept in touch, soon dated then married May 29, 1944.
